Julie loves Newark!

As a long-term resident of Newark and a dedicated public servant, Julie is committed to the success of our community. As an educator for the Newark Unified School District and a Newark Planning Commissioner, she has gained a deep understanding of the Newark community. Newark is where her daughter attends public school. She and her spouse are board members of a Newark nonprofit organization that directly supports Newark families. She is also a member of Newark Rotary and the Optimist Club and supports Newark athletics.

Julie’s extensive involvement in the City of Newark has given her a thorough understanding of its organization and projects. As a Newark Unified School District educator and a Planning Commissioner, she has actively shaped our community. She attended the swearing-in of Police Chief Arguello and the retirement of Chief Anderson, highlighting Newark’s impressive achievement of employing women police officers, far above the national average. Julie is familiar with Newark’s Capital Improvement Plan of 2024 to 2026.

She has also engaged in key initiatives such as the groundbreaking of Eden Housing, providing affordable housing solutions. She attended the Newark State of the City address and reviewed plans to revitalize "old town" Newark. Additionally, she celebrated Juneteenth at the Silliman Center, reflecting our commitment to diversity and inclusion. Her completion of ethical training with the League of California Cities has further prepared her to navigate municipal processes and advocate effectively for our community. She received Choking First Aid training at La Cabana and has attended Newark Neighborhood Watch Captain's meetings.

Julie Del Catancio believes in “Empowering Newark for the Future.”

Receiving the Gold President's Volunteer Service Award for 2023 is a true honor that reflects Julie’s deep dedication to community service. Engaging in events like the Newark Days Parade marching with Newark Unified School District or Betty Gentry, Science Day, beautification projects, night markets, and assemblies has allowed her to contribute meaningfully to Newark's vibrant community life and support our local schools.

Serving on the California Law Association Executive Committee enabled Julie to shape legislative proposals and encourage greater community involvement in local politics. Her passion for civic engagement began with voter registration as a youth, then interning with Congressman Pete Stark, driven by a heartfelt belief in the power of every individual, regardless of age, to positively influence our community. These experiences have enriched her understanding of the importance of active participation and collaboration in creating a stronger, more connected Newark.

Julie Del Catancio's Roots

Her maternal side farmed; they first arrived in the US to work farming in California during the 1920s. While a farmer, the war began and her grandfather, Freddie Cariaso Care, enlisted in the US Military and served in WWII and with the Army for over 25 years. Her maternal grandmother worked for the Gideon Masonic Home.

Julie’s paternal side immigrated when her father was in elementary school. Her great-grandfather was a CPA/attorney and state treasurer. Her grandfather, a CPA, and her grandmother, a secretary, worked for a California School District.

As a child, she resided multi- and cross-generationally with her large family. These experiences shaped Julie's commitment to community, inspired by her family's resilience and service. Her father retired from the Federal Reserve Bank, and her mother retired from the phone company, embracing America's opportunities and contributing to their community.

Her daughter is involved with the American Legion, and was selected to represent Newark in the Boys and Girls State in Sacramento California where she was elected as student county supervisor.
